Basement wall
Basement update

Quick update on the basement work.....
Freddy and I have decided to put another bedroom in the basement.
It just seemed and felt odd having a 1 bed, 2.5 bath house. Also in summer, with the upstairs bedroom windows open, one pointing at the freeway and one at the stop sign, traffic noise is just still a bit much when you're stressed out trying to sleep, even after being here 2 months. (Yesterday was 2 months - just a bit unsettling in itself) Lastly, again, in summer, the basement is cooler with no AC required.
So, how to make a cheap bedroom? Put up a wall.
I last did framing as a teenager while living in 'The Gap' (no really, that is the name of the suburb in Queensland - here is the link to it on Google Maps), so it's been a while.
I'm sure I could have worked it out, but securing the bottom plate to the slab was the uncomfortable unknown.
Turns out, our neighbor Dean used to do commercial carpentry for many a year, and he had a car with a broken electric seat. I fixed the wiring issue in the car, so he is helping build the wall. (He made it clear that he would have helped regardless of the seat, but it's nice that we can help each other out with different skills).

Dean knew a trick of hammer drilling the slab and then using three nails to hold the bottom plate. I gotta say, it looked really neat and clearly something he has dialed as the arrangement of the nails was pretty specific. And best of all, no way that bottom plate is going anywhere!

It did not take Dean but 40 minutes or so to frame it up, he had the air compressor and nail gun etc, all the tools.
That said, I asked about noggins and he said they don't do them here (in the USA).
I tried to walk away, but....

I just could not let the chance slip past.
I will be setting up my main computer system in the basement (moving it out of its temporary location in the shop) and wanted to get the other two monitors mounted to the wall. Perfect time to add some plates.
I've got no idea where I need to put them, so I used wide ones and just figured somewhere on the wall is better than not having the option.
Slapping in the other two noggins just felt right.
So. Freddy and I have a 12' x 12' room. Most likely to be the master bedroom.
Oh, and Freddy wants a sliding barn door, so I need to put 2 more 2x4's on the top plate for the rails to screw into, and that should be about ready to drywall (plaster).
Not wall related, but not worth its own blog....
I need an Ethernet drop to the basement computer location. Not a fan of wifi for main PCs.
So now is the perfect time to get one run from the shop.
I've already got a spare intended for this in the trench, so just extended it around the corner of the house.

Tried to sneak over the top of the 8-inch slab of the basement. I just nicked the top of it, eh, close enough.

Mainly, the chase wire is to tape the Ethernet jack latch down. You never know when you have to back out a bit.

Down the basement and into the new wall.
That should give me a solid 1g/1g vs whatever wifi feels like on the day.
As for the drywall.. some progress is being made...
