Father-son micro EV rides

eBoard rides

Terry has had his eye on a one-wheel for years.
I've been a skateboard rider since my early teenage years.
No surprises then that we both ended up with our different modes of micro EV propulsion at some point in our lives.
Pretty cool that the timing was such that within months of each other, we happened on it.

I bought an off-road e-longboard off a mate. The price was right since he said the batteries were shagged. And he was right, I could barely hit 2 miles. But after about 10-15 rides around the neighborhood, I was hooked.

Terry had a filter alert for a one-wheel, and picked up a very low-mileage one for a solid discount.
I ripped and replaced the battery and speed control on the board since the battery charger was closed-source and no one had reverse engineered it.

Before I voided its warranty

The flat cells had to go since they are very hard to buy these days and I wanted to double its range from 5 miles to 10 or more.

Flat cells are unfun
Terry and CAD
The first print just about nailed it. Final print in black.
Proof of concept test ride was a solid experience.
Very happy with the end result.... Well, mostly...
Terry took it for a quick rip a month or two before he got his one-wheel
I rode it the 30min or so to Opto one day. Had a blast.
No, you can never have too many antennas.
Its called a one-wheel because....

First father and son ride

With each of our bits of kit sort of sorted, we decided to do a father-son ride at lunch rather than our usual 3-4 mile run.
Had a total blast. The board's top speeds are about the same 15 mph, and our skill levels are roughly the same, so it was nice to be out together, just enjoying the time together. Sorry about the goofy music. The video editor software put it on, and neither of us can figure out how to turn it off.

Second ride

We loved it so much, a few weeks later (May 2024) we went for another lunch rip.

I am for sure going to get myself a one-wheel at some point. Not having a remote in your hand is just really weirdly liberating. Riding it is as close to subconscious mind control of something I have ever experienced. It really encourages a flow state. It's quite amazing.... I've joked with Terry about buying his when he decides to upgrade, but he's thinking he's going to keep the bones and replace the brains (speed control, etc.)... I'd like to update my board for one with more torque, so I'm in no rush.
