Ok, this is nothing like you've heard before via this blog, so just give it a go, or not, but don't feel too bad if you have to shut it down early....
I still clearly remember the first time I heard this track....
No idea of the year, at a Google'ed guess it would have been around 2006.
I'd heard about an upcoming rave at Kryal Castle just outside of Ballarat, got the Ok from Freddy, and rode my Goldwing up around 7 pm. Goldwing, because I'd heard that parking and getting out after sunrise was a mess... Wow, was that ever correct. Loved the speedy escape that bike gave me an hour or so after sunrise.
Anyway, getting there around sunset gave me time to quickly check out each of the rave areas and get my bearings for how to move between them smoothly before everything got really dark and weirdly lit.
I recall that there were about six areas of different sizes set up, mostly with different trance types, so they catered to all tastes. It was an over-18 event, for what it was worth.
Clearly, the main stage was the attraction, and I knew I would be catching the sunrise set there in about 8 hours, so no need to just spend all night there. (I'll see if we have space to play the track I heard at the Kryal Castle rave at sunrise in 2008 - it was an over-the-top emotional moment in my life).
So, I moved around as the DJs changed, and as I liked or did not like what I heard, I just floated between the arenas.
Some DJs had no clue about sound quality, and if it was just over-the-top distorted, even if I liked it, I usually moved on. I had earplugs in the whole time, but even with them, the distortion was annoying.
Anyway, it was about 2 am, and I found myself in the psy-trance area and really digging it. I'd heard about the style but had not really spent a lot of time getting to know it. The DJs (no idea who) were on point with just seamless mixes, and I found myself really digging the complex beats and chaotic samples.
Cities of the Future came on and made a mental note of this part of the 'lyrics'.
Back at work that week, a quick Google introduced me to Infected Mushroom.
Loved it so much I actually drove up to LA to see an open-to-close set from the guys a few years after we moved over. Never thought while living in Australia that I'd ever get the chance to see them live at a venue in Los Angeles.
So yeah, that was the psy-trance period of my life. I still have them on shuffle, but don't really keep up with it, I much rather the whole pure trance sound now - I must be getting old.
Don't watch the following video <grin>
Memories. Wow.
Learning to do the original (2006ish) Melbourne Shuffle is on my retirement to-do list.
