Miss Linn - Gearbox Grease
Greaseless gearboxes are thing now?
I don't have the time or the hardcore interest to join a lot of forums and such on the topic of electric longboards / electric skateboards so I've just added one sub to my Reddit list.
Over the year or so of passively reading some of those posts as they drift past I did pick up that gearbox grease quality can be hit and miss.
The key seemed to be that no matter how it rides or sounds check inside the box at the 250 mile mark and depending on what you see, go from there. (Basically it came down to either change out what's there, or top it up).

To say I was shocked and more than a little disappointed when I opened up one of Miss Linn's gearboxes is an understatement.
At this point, I was annoyed with myself that I 'waited' for the 250 mile mark to tick over before I jumped in. I should have done it at the 50 mile mark.....

Just the tiniest whiff of factory grease. And nowhere near any of the gears!
I actually took the time, before opening the box, to ask a few mates up here what I should use to clean out the old grease I thought I was going to find... Turns out, it was not much of a problem.
BTW, I had 3 answers, WD40, Diesel, brake cleaner/de-greaser.

I went with Red Lion CV2 because it was recommended, but in another 250 to 500 miles when I next open it up, I might pull the CV2 out and put in Lucas Red and Tacky.
I think I want something a little 'runnier' in here now that I have seen the insides.
Enough to say, the other side was pretty much exactly the same. Almost dry as a bone.
After adding the CV2 grease there is slightly more friction when turning by hand vs the dry box, but after riding it, I cant feel any more or less heat than before and after. Also kicking myself that I did not take thermal camera images of the box/motor before and after.
The one BIG difference is that the board is now a LOT quieter, which I am more than Ok with.
It used to have a real jet turbine whine to it, sort of cool, but mostly annoying. Now its a lot quieter with just the odd harmonic whine at some speeds. (I'm guessing its the coils of the motors acting as loud speakers for the pulsing from the speed controller).
Update. Just before I hit 'publish' on this blog I got to go for a good long run and found that the boxes were in fact running a bit hotter than usual.
Seems I used too much of a good thing.
Rather than just removing some of the CV2, I pulled it all out and put the red and tacky in.

Oh, and for what its worth, there is a raging tribal split in the electric longboard world... Gearbox vs belt drive.
My last board was a belt drive and I had enough issues with it to know that I never ever want to own another belt drive board. Ever.
