  • Precise Drones

There is a big difference between your hobby drone and the real deal….
This video is a great example of the latter.

A lot of companies are spending a lot of time and money to come up with drone solutions.
While they are amazing, I think for now a lot of them are solutions looking for problems to solve.
Once we get batteries that can run for 8-12 hours, the applications for this sort of thing could really get exciting.
But, while you are stuck at 10-15 minutes of air time, there is not much you can do in that amount of time.

In short, having 4-8 rotors beating at the air to keep a craft aloft is inefficient.

  • Another small computer

At first sight, this looks great.

    http://www.engadget.com/2015/12/09/pine-a64-64-bit-4k-maker-board/

64 bit cpu, good chunk of memory, connectivity, great price….
So why am I not falling over myself to spend 15 bucks on their Kickstarter?
Because they have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory… The OS runs off a micro SD card.
    Bah.

Still, my hope remains, that someone, someday will make a nice sweet little single board computer that ticks all the boxes that we need for an IoT device that runs Linux.

I guess the point of this post is that you need to keep your wits about you and read the fine print and think about things before you jump in (even at 15 bucks).

  • Apple is selling high end speakers

I read about these speakers a while back, but their cost put them out of my interest level.
    Apple has picked them up.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/12/08/apple-stores-expand-high-end-audio-offering-with-devialet-phantom-implosive-speakers

At a respective $1,990 and $2,390, Devialet’s 750-watt Phantom and 3,000-watt Silver Phantom speakers are the second and third most expensive speakers in the Apple Store’s current lineup, coming in behind Bang & Olufsen’s BeoPlay A9 floor-standing unit. The biomorphic white pods could be worth the price of admission, however, enjoying accolades from industry heavyweights including The Absolute Sound, SoundStage! and Rolling Stone, as well as various tech publications like Wired.

They are still way out of my range, but they continue to get rave reviews and the fact that Apple stores are going to be selling them is a huge win for them.

One of these days I will have a nice stereo, but not today.

  • Race to the moon

Been watching this for a little while, but we are (sort of) getting close to knowing who is in the race. To the moon.

    http://arstechnica.com/science/2015/12/game-on-second-competitor-in-google-lunar-xprize-gets-a-ride-to-space/

Time is running out for the 16 teams entered into the Google Lunar XPRIZE, which requires entrants to land a small spacecraft on the surface of The Moon by the end of 2017. But now, eight years after the prize was announced, the competitors are beginning to show tangible signs of progress.

The objective is pretty straight forward (to describe, getting it done is the funner part).

To win the prize a team must land a privately funded rover on the Moon, have that vehicle travel 500 meters, and then transmit high definition video and images back to Earth. The first team to accomplish this wins $20 million

So we have a little time yet, but it is good to see reports of progress.
We are at the age where blokes like you and you can get a satellite into low earth orbit for the cost of a second hand motorbike, so getting a team to put a rover on the moon is a very cool challenge, and very doable.

    Watch this space.
