  • New look to the blog.

You might have noticed that I have been messing around with the look of the blog a fair bit of late.
I was unhappy with the way the original handled photos…. in short, they were resized to be too small.
Many of the different looks I tried had different problems, but I think this current look is a keeper for a while.
Drop me a comment and let me know what you think.

We are off to Palomar Mountain in about an hour. This is part two of our Docent training. Today we are going to be going over the actual tour, and then giving bits of it. Next Sunday I think I will be heading up on my own as we have a special event talk, not linked to the Doncent training.
Next month we start giving Sunday tours.

I am going to try and catch up with a few emails this evening when we get back…..training week is a busy week and I dont get time to keep up with the emails.
I think thats about all thats blogable from here at the moment.

  • Major upgrade

Not many of you will be interested, but, for those that are….. I have finally, after about a year and a bit, backed up my whole linux hard drive (imaged it onto another larger drive of a totally different type (thanks Gary, it did not work, but got me close enough)), AND, upgraded from Ubuntu 6.06 to 8.04.
Phew. Im excited. (there are a few ‘broken’ things, but my linux gru is in town for a few days this weekend… what timing!)

  • Building USB web cam drivers in Linux

I have really struggled getting motivated to do much after work, so I thought I would have a bash at something I like. Web streaming video cameras.
I wanted to get a USB webcam going on my Linux server, in the past I have had my mate and Linux guru Dan help me out, its a long way for him to come help this time, so I was all on my own.
Down load the driver, do a ‘make’, then a ‘sudo make install’. No errors, plug the camera in and it worked.
    Pretty easy really.
I just wanted to make a contrast with how it would have gone with Windows……

    Windows mouse

Could not have said it any better……..

  • The weather crashes at midnight.

There is some ActiveX issue with the Windows emulation in Linux that causes the weather to stop updating the web at a few minutes after midnight…… Im going away for the weekend. What a shame that where we are going has no mobile phone coverage……….. So what are ya going to do…. get in your bus and chase me?????

  • Weather is up.

Well, I dont know how its going to go long term, but for the moment the computer and I seem to be much happier just to be running the weather under Wine. (Heh, the Lunix emulation of Windows is less CPU intensive than Windows its self?)
Sable? Not holding my breath, the weather station software is horrible at its best. I am just going to keep clicking on my SMSpup adds and keep racking those points up….. I have a feeling that on the other side of the planet there is a bike riding, bus dreaming guy doing the exact same thing…….. Game on!
