Week 1 of marathon training is done.
Day 1. Cross training did not happen. We intended to do the usual Monday free weights circuit in the gym (with Benson), but we have a big press release coming up on the 12th of February and are going pretty hard to get ready for it, we ended up working late rather than working out.
Day 2. 3 miles. Also happened to be the first day of training here at Opto, so we just went latter in the day. Very straight forward, just cut a bit off the usual 4 mile run through Old Town Temecula.
Day 3. 5 miles. Ended up doing this one solo. Trance, very straight forward. Through Old Town with a 1/2 mile out and back tacked on the middle. We have done this run many times in the past.
Day 4. 3 Miles. Solo again. Added some speed work into it. The plan said to do the speed work tomorrow, but with training after the run, I had to hurry it up anyways.
Day 5. 5 miles. Solo. Shirtless in the middle of winter! Nice trance mix. Very enjoyable run.
Day 6. Rest. Gary’s favorite day. Went for a 2 mile walk with Freddy before breakfast it was such a beautiful day.
Day 7. Long run. 10 miles. Freddy got me some Gu gel to have (100 calories and a bit of carbs). Ended up having to take two belts, one for the water and Gu and one with my phone, worked out pretty good, but want to get it worked out better. Had a great run. Had forgotten how much I love the long runs.
Loved the watch as soon as the sun came up and I could see it. Still getting it dialed in. There are a lot of options, but there is no question, I love the data. Here is just a small taste.

Gut probe
My Dad and I have been having an off-blog email exchange/ chat about diet and how the gut might be more involved in the mood than people are currently thinking.
Thus, this article caught my attention.Ingestible gut sensors reveal potential new immune system
Ingestible technology — the stalwart theme of medical sci-fi — has been in the works for decades, but now researchers are closer than ever before to taking it mainstream thanks to successful trials of gas-sensing capsules. The swallowable sensors, designed by RMIT University in Australia, could revolutionize the way gut disorders and diseases are diagnosed and treated, offering a potential game-changer for the one-in-five people worldwide who will suffer from gastrointestinal problems in their lifetimes.
Here is an interesting section.
The capsule is the size of a vitamin pill and works by detecting and measuring gut gas in real time, then sending data to a mobile phone. Trials have uncovered bodily mechanisms never seen before, including what could be an entirely new immune system. “We found that the stomach releases oxidising chemicals to break down and beat foreign compounds that are staying in the stomach for longer than usual,” said study lead and capsule co-inventor Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh. “This could represent a gastric protection system against foreign bodies. Such an immune mechanism has never been reported before.”
Bottom line. Only due to this new tech are we finding out more about the insides of our bodies. The fact that we can do it while alive and kicking is awesome. No stress of surgery or such. Getting data that is timely and relevant to the person with the question.
I’d swallow it and download the app. Sign me up.

Apple Health data helps convict man of murder
This should not come as too much of a surpise for regular readers of this blog, but a German man has been found guilty due mostly in part of the health data from his Apple Watch.
Apple’s Health app provides key evidence in German rape & murder case
Critically, during the time the suspect is thought to have dragged the body down a river embankment and climbed back up, the Health app logged him as “climbing stairs.” Local police successfully tried to recreate his movements.
My point is not really about committing crimes while wearing fitness trackers, but about how its only a matter of time till an innocent person is in trouble for living their typical daily lives and the data falls into the hands of someone that wants to pin something on them.

Data or looks
Never before have I ever been so paralyzed by choice than the past few months.
I have been on a personal data binge and have been looking at heart rate variability and running data specifically.
I could do a whole blog on HRV, and perhaps I will at some stage, but enough to say that you use a sensor to measure the beat-to-beat variability of your heart rate, the more variable, the more rested and ready for activity you are. Low variability means your body is hunkered down and is looking to rest. The thought/plan is that you take your HRV each day to get a feel for what stress your body is under (or not) and thus what you can throw at it for the day.
Alongside of HRV is also body temperature. It goes up and down according to how stressed your body is.
For a good many weeks, we have been using Terry’s old cycling heart rate chest strap and an app on my phone to take my morning HRV. The problem is, waking up and getting the strap on and such impacts the reading.
Long story short, I found a sensor that you can wear to bed and it takes both HRV and body temp while you sleep. It arrives in April. Longer than I would like, but eh, that’s what you get for living in the future.
(Obviously more about that sensor when it arrives and I get it settled into my life).Running data is where the real issue has been.
I can either get a nice looking smart watch that gives me very poor running metrics, or I can get an ugly looking watch that is not very good at smart notifications, but amazing at running / activity data.
The nice one is really good looking, nice notifications, but somewhat poor readability outside in full sun and has about 18 hour battery life. The ugly smart watch has a very low power screen, so it will be hard to read indoors, but under full sunlight, it comes to life and is very easy to read. But as a result it gets around a week between charges. (Perfect for hiking in the Grand Canyon, which I don’t have planned, but would do at a drop of the hat).
The good looking one does not have a GPS, but could depending on which model I go with. Either way, it really does not matter as it simply tracks your route and does very little with the data points. The poor display has GPS and gives you a wealth of data of each point along the way, so it ties your running/hiking/cycling data to each location. Updated live on the watch and on the map when you get back and sync it.My Fitbit Ionic was supposed to be an upgraded fitness tracker, but once I got it and started using it, I quickly found that it was both a very poor fitness tracker and smartwatch. I am considering selling it, but Fitbit have a fantastic API and so I can easily get my data out and into both Strava and groov. Both very important things for me. I will probably end up wearing both watches since both have their strengths.
Both the good looking watch and the ugly one have below average API’s so its going to be hard to get the data outside of their apps/web pages.
I have done the usual thing of splitting a page in half and putting the pros and cons of each on the page and every time I do it, no matter what angle I take (form or function), they always come out to be exactly 50/50.
Poor old Freddy has been driven mad as I try and come to a conclusion for what device to go for.
Either are pretty big dollar commitments, I have been saving for a long while so I have the money, but I can only buy once. We can’t afford both (and I am out of wrists at this point) and to save for the other as well is going to take months, my point is, money is not a consideration for either, I think it’s worth that much to me.It’s also very personal. You wear the thing and it’s part of your daily life.
I thought about posting pictures and such here and asking you guys to vote, but its my watch, my wrist, my life, my data… Hard to ask someone else to chose for me.So. Today. I chose ugly. Data over looks. Function over form.
Ordered it from Amazon. Should be there when I get home.
