  • Work Experience.

The past 4 weeks have gone past pretty quick.
For three of those 4 weeks, we had two work experience students with us.
Shawn and James are from High Tech High, a school down toward San Diego way.
As part of their course requirements, they have to do some work experience. Some of their class mates got some pretty lame stuff at other places (doing paper work and the usual filing), but Shawn and James landed on their feet when they picked Opto 22, they got me!
For a few months now I have had a project on my to-do list that has just never made it to the top, perfect for these two guys to have a go at.

    Work Experience
    Shawn and James

So, put them to work I did. Kind of threw them in the deep end in a bunch of ways.
I had some pressing deadline stuff that just had to get done, so I did not have the time to work with them much.
Just tell them what I needed and why and let them at it.
They both did a fantastic job and delivered on all accounts.

    Yeah, fish eye
    I spy a fish eye

I think they both learned a great deal and got a lot out of it.
It was a real pleasure to have them in our office for three weeks, and I wish them both well for their futures.

  • Shameless self plug

    Just a quickie……
This happens pretty often, but I keep forgetting that most of you guys (and girl) probably don’t hang out in automation web sites, so I thought I would post a pretty typical example of what I am talking about……

Now and then some of us get ‘interviewed’ over the phone for different websites or industry mags.
Sometimes, most of the time, we get quoted or referenced.
I don’t think much about it now after the n’th time, but thought yous might be interested. (Hey, keep me happy and at least fake it this one time).

If nothing else you now know what two of my co-workers look like.

  • Hi Ben here!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the Opto 22 video vault on YouTube (you did watch the Walnut video right?), I pop up my ugly face…..

Thats right, yesterday I finished editing the OptoMinute on the new energy monitoring unit (EMU).
Pretty happy with how it came up. Jean (one of the technical writers) came up with the bulk of the script, and we tweaked it for my voice / style. David then drove the teleprompter and camera for the recording. He then also taught me the basics of Adobe Premier Pro to start editing the clip. John (our graphic artist) did the illustrations and animations with a bit of tweaking by David. I did the Pulse Energy and Google PowerMeter screen grabs and got it pretty much roughed into shape. Benson and Jean gave a lot of helpful input and suggestions.
Its a real team effort, but we are all pretty happy with how it came out, I just hope that people see past the accent and are not put off by it.

We are starting work on the next video today, its going to be a more in depth look at the EMU, should come to about 6 minutes we hope. I hope to do a lot of the editing for that one as well.
Really enjoying the editing. Its really interesting how you can tweak small things and totally change the feel of the clip.

So, Matt and Garry… try and be nice with my fragile ego… you know how movie stars can get right?

  • Work photo shoot.

    image

Just a quick shot of the new location at work.
I used a filter on the camera, I  rather like it.

Oh, and not only did I take the photo on my phone, add the effect on the phone, but I also posted this blog entry from my phone.
    Android rocks.
