  • Ticks are not time.
  • Its been a week of C++.
    Clearly I don’t know the first thing about C++, Terry has been writing it and I have been setting up the hardware to test his code.
    In short, we have been timing how fast some Opto analog inputs can be scanned and detect a change.
    To do this, we have a relay (digital output) and an analog input that the relay changes.
    So the C++ fires the relay, starts a timer, scans the analog input over and over and when it sees it change, stop the timer and print the value on the console (Im logged into the Opto gear via SSH – PuTTY).
    At first we were getting some crazy times that were all over the shop. They sort of looked good, but with a ton of Opto experience under my belt, I knew they were not right.
    I asked to see the code even though I can’t code, I can sort of follow logic. It all looked good except for one bit, the time function. It was using ticks.
    Cant remember where or when, I but I vaguely remember something about ticks from the past and so I did some Google foo and sure enough, ticks are CPU cycles.
    So if your program is using 80% of the CPU and something is using the other 20%, you are only going to see 80% of ‘time’.
    Bottom line, with C++ you need to use chronos. This means you need to change your compiler a little, but Terry got it sorted and we ended up with some real time values.
    Passed the code to the customer and have not heard back yet, but we are hopeful.

  • Trust your experience and stick up for it.
  • This happen last week and on Deepsea Challenge.
    I know something is either wrong or right, but can’t verbalize clearly enough it in a heated exchange, so I just give up, back down and end up going with something that I just know is not right.
    The annoying thing is that both times I am the one that ends up taking the fall for the other guy.

  • Its a free (for 100 or less devices) VPN.
    Its great for Raspberry Pis.
    You install it on your computer (both ends) and you end up with a tunnel between the two on a non-routable IP. Thus its pretty secure.
    I have been using it a ton this week as we install 2 new Raspberry Pi builds in the UK.
    One for ADSB and one for ACARS.

  • Github is not for Node-RED users.
  • The whole point of Node-RED is that it is low code / no code.
    How then are low/no coders supposed to use github?
    It is the most unfriendly unintuitive unapproachable platform I have ever come across.
    I knew it was not for me when I found myself at 4:30am looking at my third stackoverflow page on how to place an image on a github readme.md
    Why am I even bleeting like this? Because I just want somewhere to share and collaborate with others my Node-RED flows around the topic of aircraft spotting/tracking.
    I have tried here in the blog (ie, WordPress), its horrible, I have thought about YouTube, but I hate learning by video and figure others are the same (also, you cant share code), I thought about starting a forum, but things get lost even with site search, thought about a groups.io, but don’t want it gated (ie, you have to join the group to see the posts), medium is a dumpster fire for comments…. I really don’t know where to host and share this stuff.
    There seems to be a big gap in providing a community / platform for us low/no coders to share and collaborate.

  • Automatic TLE updates
  • After a tweak to the code by the author, we finally have Node-RED automatically getting and using fresh TLE data from celestrak.com every 24 hours.
    This is a really really big deal and I’d love to share my code, but github is broken.
    We used it in the past week to track the dead rocket re-entry.
    I have also started to put together some Node-RED flows to get us to the point of having an antenna rotator built about the new TLE data.

  • Dish Tracking.
  • Was up at 3am again on the weekend doing what I hope is the last orbit adjustment.
    I think I had my negative numbers the wrong way around in the range node.
    The past 24 hours have been much more even data rates than the past few months. Nothing I can do for a few more days than simply leave it alone and watch from a distance.

  • Rehashed home computer monitors
  • No photos of this one, email me if you want to see it.
    But in short, it was bugging me that I could not see much of the aircraft messages (16:9 landscape monitor) and I could not see the two maps showing the aircraft positions at the same time.
    So now I finally have a vertical monitor at home (I run two verticals at work) and I have two upper monitors that show a map each.
    Yeah, I now have 7 monitors. I’m Ok with that.

  • Stunnle experiment is over
  • Back in January I put in Stunnle to try and put https on some http webservers (VRS and Node-RED) that I was running.

    The problem is that Stunnle swallows the incoming connection. I have lost all visibility to incoming connections.
    I have no idea of who is connecting or what data they are using. I don’t like running blind.
    So yeah, my aircraft tracking website URL’s are all different. It’s a small price to pay.

  • Pizza pan helix
  • I have finalized the build for the 7 turn helix that I am building in volume for L-Band (~1.5GHz) AERO data.

    Founds some 8 inch stainless steel pizza pans on Amazon, so that’s the reflector/base and the rest you know about.
    Terry is printing more frameworks for me and I have copper for 7 in total.
    Pretty sure they are all ‘sold’ and I will need to print more.


  • UA2781 lands at Midway Atoll on April 16th 2021

    Settle in, this is going to be a long one.

    Background. Oh so briefly.

    C-Band uses a 6 foot (2 meter) satellite tracking dish on ~3.5 GHz. It picks up the aircraft to ground crew communications.
    L-Band uses a 7 turn 3D printed helix (swapped out from a flaked out patch antenna only 3 days before this went down) on ~1.5 GHz. It picks up the dispatch (ground) to aircraft communications.
    What unfolds is a testament to having a fully configured and well tuned Satcom/AERO ground station. Full credit to my mate in Australia. Andrew runs the station and keeps it tip top. (Even to the point of drilling a hole in the dish to let the water drain out when it tropical pours rain!)
    As well as needing a reliable RF data source, to see something unfold in real time and share it with aviation geeks around the world, you need a real time web-based dashboard with some sort of way to string together the conversation (aka, database).
    My tool of choice is Node-RED. A low code environment with amazing power. A blog for another time.
    Over the years I have been finding ‘interesting’ ways to filter and then be alerted to ACARS messages that are out of the routine. The result is a bit of JavaScript that has a list of carefully curated words, if any are in an ACARS message from any source, I get notified, exactly how depends on the ‘severity’ of the trigger word.

    Ok, enough backstory.

    Messages are going to be tagged as follows:
    ‘Pilot’. This is Pilot to dispatch. They come via the dish.
    ‘Dispatch’. This (in this case) is the United Airlines dispatch operator. They come via the helix.
    ‘Aircraft’. This is the aircraft avionics (software). They come in via the dish.
    Names and other personal details have been redacted. (Captin Walt, if you find this, please drop me a line – I’d love to chat).

    April 16th I was minding my business when this message set the adventure in motion.

    You sometimes see funky numbers in the panel on the left, so the altitude did not set me off.
    Before I could push it from my mind….. Just a few minutes latter, I saw this:

    Midway Atoll is an emergency diversion point for ETOPS operations, so it makes sense they went there if there was an issue.
    It looks like they just followed procedure and flew straight in.

    We later read a media report that said they flew around the island a few times before landing, but we have no ACARS or ADSC data to confirm that.
    It also does not make sense to extend an emergency like that.

    FOB is Fuel On Board. Its a common way to ask or report how much gas is in the tank. (Sent in weight, either lb or kg or something else, depending on the aircraft owner, crew and region – yay for standards right?).

    Ok, so from that we know they landed due to smoke somewhere in the aircraft. Probably the cockpit since the pilot/FO had to smell it. (Remember, it was a cargo flight).

    At this point I am just so stoked that the Inmarsat 143E (Cairns Australia) ground station is working so well at this stage.
    Times like this makes me feel it was all worth it.
    The crazy thing is I sent Andrew a 3D printed 7 turn helix my son printed and I built to replace his SDR-Blog Patch antenna (which was not great), Andrew just got it installed about 3 days prior and its working great.
    We are getting both sides of the conversion live!!!!

    CPDLC is “CPDLC is a two-way data-link system by which controllers can transmit non urgent ‘strategic messages to an aircraft as an alternative to voice communications. The message is displayed on a flight deck visual display. The CPDLC application provides air-ground data communication for the ATC service.”
    They are so important and often interesting we filter them out and display them in their own table on the website.
    In this case dispatch are telling the pilot that they knew the aircraft was in distress and Midland was the best option. Dispatch is ahead of the flight (so to speak) and are trying to raise anyone on the island to ready things for the landing.

    Aircraft: While its sitting on the ground sends out automated messages from time to time.

    Its a bit cryptic, and many of us are working on their exact meaning. Usually its stuff like engine or aircraft health and status data.

    A few of the guys were looking at background information while I was mashing the ‘refresh’ button on the data feed.

    The runway is nice and long. A few guys were looking up the runway length needed for the aircraft and its rough cargo weight.
    No problems there.
    The birds on the other hand…..

    This is a result of:
    “47 passengers spent almost six hours — longer than it usually takes to fly across the continental U.S. — sitting onboard a plane that was parked on the tarmac of Rochester International Airport in Minnesota.”
    Airlines that defy the tarmac delay rules can be fined up to $27,500 for each passenger on board the affected flight. With commercial jets routinely carrying over 200 passengers these days, that means failure to follow the tarmac delay rules could cost an airline more than $5 million in fines for a single flight. The potential for that kind of financial hit is probably enough to get the attention of even the largest airline.

    So, the aircraft has this tarmac delay built in and messages the pilots that they need to take action and keep track of the time they are on the ground.
    Even though this is a cargo flight, the aircraft share similar software regardless of their ‘cargo’, be it boxes or people.

    After years of reading ACARS messages I personally love the guys in dispatch almost as much as pilots now. They work so hard for the crew (and passengers). This operator is thinking way ahead and wants to be sure they have everything the crew will need to get back in the air before they even need it. A good dispatch operator will reduce the crew work load a lot (I have also seen a fair few snarky dispatch messages FWIW).

  • Had some people visiting in the building for the first time in over a year.
    They are an oil and gas company that is looking to use RIO in a monitoring application.
    Great guys, great company and great to brainstorm up a solution with face to face (mask to mask), but yeah, social interaction is still exhausting.

  • Geostationary satellite orbits
  • Still reading papers and stuff trying to get my head around orbital parameters.
    Mostly how much they drift and over what sort of period.
    Really interesting, really over my head.

  • 3D printed helix
  • The guy in Czechoslovakia that I have been chatting with on-line about satellite antennas has uploaded the lastest version of the 7 turn helix antenna that we have been building and using.

    There are 4 versions of the antenna, so be sure and select the right one for your application.
    Terry has printed one and if it builds and tests well it will be the one he prints in volume and the one that I build 7 or 8 of and sell to the guys that have been asking for one.

  • Dish focal point upgrade
  • Spent some time on Sunday confirming my main dish focal point (The 6 foot (2m) dish that tracks 98w 4F3).
    My dad came up with the idea to use al-foil to show the suns reflection and show me where the radio waves are focused on.

    The day started out overcast, so the foil is not doing much in this photo.
    It was really hard for me to get photos of the actual before and after since both axis were unlocked and the dish was moving all over the place.
    I also don’t have much room around it where it is in the upper garden.

    You get the idea.
    The before shot of the focal point was very large, about 2 feet in diameter at a guess. It was pretty clear, but just a lot larger than I expected.

    This is the focal point as it is now.
    I just had to shorten the arms to bring it in.

    Now when I moved the feed horn in an out of the ring I can see some difference to the signal. (Before the shortening, if I moved the horn all the way in, I was going the right way, but was still short of the focus).

    The top half has the live signal as it comes from the satellite. You are looking at about 2 MHz of spectrum.
    The bottom is the history (or waterfall) of the signal, its hard to see in a photo, but the bottom waterfall falls like rain drops down a window.
    Its pretty handy as you can see the length and history of a data burst.
    Anyway, here is the thing… the after focal update is stronger. You can see, yes, I have more noise (the background speckle), but note that I am now getting some yellow in the signal.
    It goes from blue, to yellow to red. My goal is red of course, that will give the decoding software the best chance of getting the aircraft data out of the burst.
    Bottom line…. Due the moving around of everything, I need to do some more dish tracking re-calibration and tuning…. So yeah, more getting up at 2:30am.
