  • Thank-you.

I have been thinking about this post for too long… Time to stop thinking and start typing!

The past month and a half at work have been pretty amazing. While we have not really got anything to show for it yet, there is a LOT of cool stuff happening behind the scenes. I look forward to the day when I can show you all what we have been working on, but, in the mean time, this blog post has been brewing…

<Warning, light geek content to follow>

A lot of what I have been doing lately has involved Linux, the web, and networking.
We have taken our dual Ethernet controllers, used both ports, and put one port on the Internet via a router and the other on the Opto 22 intranet via a switch. We do this so we can access the cotnroller from within Opto 22 and also from externally via the Internet.
Both have separate sub-nets, the Internet one goes via a Linksys router. Of course that needed configuring as well with all the required port forward rules.
We also have been working with IP video cameras, and they needed setting up on the network as well.
We then turned to Linux, I had to install it with Apache, PHP and MySQL running. Then we had to tweak a few things to get it to run with both the IP cameras and an 8 port video camera card. Once that was done, we had to install the main camera software package.
From there, we had to install an FTP server with a nice GUI so it could be administered. The usual remote desk top (VNC) had to be set up as well.
Once that was done, we needed to add the web pages. There were some tweaks required to get the php stuff to run, so there was a bit of editing config files and the like going on.
There also was some nice email server work that I had configure up, and much assorted networking tweaking (the main PC has two network cards that had to be configured very differently). Along with the email stuff, there were some pretty neat tweaks that we had to nut out with dynamic IP addresses as well.
We had to draw out a network diagram, it was complicated enough to warrant that, we had to keep track of the many IP addresses and ports as well.
Once this was all done at work, I ended up reproducing a lot of this for the VP of marketing as well so he could get some experience in it.
Throw into the mix some iphone and itouch web stuff and it all ends up being a pretty cool and mildly complicated network configuration.

The system is in and has been stable now for some months, and in a quiet moment looking back over it all, it occurred to me that while I used a lot of different skills, 90% of what we did here came down to the knowledge passed on to me by one person. I owe that one person a great deal of thanks for my skills that allowed me to do all of this….. That one person pretty much taught me every thing I know about Linux and one person taught me all I know about networking, firewalls and routers and other very cool and some what obscure stuff…..
When I stopped and thought about it, that’s a pretty fair effort. Its not the sort of knowledge that can be passed on in a hurry either, I would think that it was about a four year process of me leaning over the poor guys shoulder asking all sorts of questions. I really admire his patience as I bumbled around and messed up many an install that he then repaired for me.

So, here we are, half a planet away, and the skill set passed on to me has empowered me to do things for my employer that will (hopefully) result in possibly 100’s of people reaping the benefits.
So, if you can teach some one something, please do, you never know where it’s going to lead…..

Lastly, I know he is going to squirm a little, but I just wanted to publicly say Thank-you Dan!

  • Itouch thoughts

A long while back, I bloged about ipods.
I still feel the same about them, but, I have discovered that there are ipods and then there are itouches…….

<!– Warning, major geek content to follow (You have been warned Sue and Jan) –>

At work we are messing with some web stuff (thanks again Nick, your idea and programming are astounding) and the main thrust of what we are doing is iphone based. Work owns an itouch and since an itouch is pretty much the same as an iphone sans phone, they have lent me the itouch so I can develop things easier.
Let the record show that I have not loaded itunes on my computer and I have not put any mp3’s or photos or videos on the sucker yet……. Instead I am totally smitten with the functionality of it. Its a weapon…..well, ok, that might be taking it a tad far…. but my point is, with a few well chosen applications it becomes a very useful tool…. How so?
First up, it runs Safari web browser. This means that it can handle streaming video, so IP camera’s and the like all show video embedded in web pages. Not only but also it means that web pages look and work like the real thing. Its surprising for such a small screen that its so useful. Ok, it can not handle flash or java, but that has not caused me a lick of trouble thus far.
Next up is an application called wififofum. Its a wifi radar. It shows you what wireless access points are in range and lots of information about them. Very handy since we are currently launching our wireless controllers and brains at work.
Pinglite is helpful, you can ping an entire subnet with this sucker and run traceroute.
The main ‘killer app’ for me however is inet.  This app is amazing. With it you can scan your network and look at all the computers attached, what ports they have open and so on. The big thing however is that it has ‘ping’. So you can ping any IP address you enter……. astounding…. no really, any ip address, on or off your connected network.
Now, that is a very handy tool to have in your pocket.
Today, I was hooking an IP camera up in the factory. Pull the itouch out and try and connect to it via the browser, no go, ping it, also no go. Ping the router its connected to. No. Reboot the router, yes, can ping it now. Ok, camera, yes, pings fine, video, get one or two frames then it freezes, ping the router, its gone…… all from standing in the factory with ‘my’ itouch. Not a laptop or computer in site. Replace the router, and all is good. Sweet.
Forget playing music on the thing, its just too handy to be playing music on it……
Then there is the usual, Twitter, Yammer, Digg, Google maps, Google earth, Youtube, Google Analytics, Skype, astronomy (ie, sky maps, I am still totally lost in these northern skies), Pandora (mmmm, trance on tap), email, weather, VNC, seismograph, and after Terry got hold of it, a bizillion games……….

Ok, well, its still got ipod roots, but this is a game changer. I finally get what the hype is about.
(Dan, just to calm you down a little, I still want to look at the Google Android).
An iphone where you have all that, plus connectivity where ever you have mobile phone coverage would just be icing.

  • More than just speed results.

I have no idea where Gary is…. its odd not to hear from him on such a topic near and dear to his heart…. especially on a topic where he can easily top me….. however, time marches on, so here are the speed results we have which will lead us totally off topic……

    From slowest to fastest…..

My Dad. He’s on outback satellite, solar and wind powered to boot, so while he has the slowest connection, its the greenest, that’s worth something.
Dads download speed is 0.51mb/s. Upload speed is 0.08mb/s. (Still better than dial up ay Dad?)
Next up we have Matt B.
His download speed is 1.29Mb/s and up is 0.21Mb/s.
Next up we have my LA mate Jason.
His download speed is 1.51 mb/s. Upload speed is 0.37 mb/s.
But the all time winner is my old flight instructor from Ballarat.
Terry’s download is a blazing 34.33Mb/s and up is 1.71Mb/s.

So, lets hear it for Ballarat’s Neighborhood Cable premium….. who would have thought they would set this little contest on its ear?

    However I feel the real conversation comes from Matts comment on the last blog which I reproduce here;
Now why would we engage in this obviously futile test when it will just fuel your internet bragging rights?????? It would appear that in the land of the stars and stripes they do have lightening fast internet, but lets turn to things that can keep us healthy such as good fresh food!!!! I know this is would be touching a raw nerve for you by now!!!! You know………….like gourmet passion fruit or mango yogurt, fresh fruit and veg’s, a great easily accessible muesli for brekky etc etc. I guess we all have our “bragging rights” in some areas and have to eat humble pie in others.
I am not particularly enjoying my slow speed internet pie right now, but it is the only pie I have. Just don’t forget Benno………….how frustrated are you going to be upon your return to this land of plenty???? Now that will be funny!!!!!!! Crispy fresh food for thought Dude!!!!!LOLROFLOL”

Matt is having a bit of a go at me, but he also makes a good point….. Each country and even state and town has its good points and bad points. Over here, we can get all you can eat internet for a good price, back home, you can have all you can eat yogurt for a good price.
I guess one of the main things I want to comment on is that I am trying to see the positive in things over here. Matt is doing the same over there.
Its the differences that make the places we live and the lives we live worthwhile or not.
Good food or good internet is not the choice. We are not picking one over the other. Its the fact that neither Matt or I have both.
Its about balance and compromise. I have really struggled finding either here for some time.
My little brag about all you can eat fast internet is just my little lame attempt to show that I found something here that tickled my interest…… but as Matt pointed out, it wont keep me alive for very long…….

  • How fast?

Heh, I am going to go out on a limb here…… Its been a while since I have hassled my old mate Gary from the safe confines of this blog… so here we go……

Hey Gary, how fast is your internet connection with Neighborhood Cable these days??
Whats your download limit these days?

The ‘other’ day (i.e. given the slug speed of the blogger, it really was about 1.5 months ago) I found out that I could, for a few extra bucks a month, bump up the speed of my Time Warner Cable…. so I did.

    Whoa!!!!!

Now THATS how the web is supposed to be! Yikes its fast!!!!
    How fast?
Well, drop on over to speedtest.net and run the test for yourself and see what you get.

Now I know my upload speed is not that flash, but I have never ever ever had such a good solid download speed.
So, my web site is a lot faster, its nice and snappy from work and the few other places I have looked.
Gary, Dan, Nick, Matt, Dad (sorry, that’s a cheep shot), Sue and others have probably not noticed much of a difference because your download speed is probably about the same as my upload speed… (giggle… sorry, too much sugar?)……
Actually, I know that Gary’s speed will be better, but I wonder how much better???
So, one and all, post your speeds. Curious minds want to know.

With increased download speeds comes, uh, increased downloads.
So far we are looking to bust our previous download record of 45Gb this month, we are up to 65Gb at the moment.
The real test will come next month as we have not had the better net speed and Samsung DVD for a whole clear month yet.
The kids and I discovered that a lot of the TV shows on Netflix are in HD (High Definition). CSI and NCIS for example are ad free and in HD, so they look fantastic. Im sure next month we will blow away this months record. Be interesting to see when we bust 100Gb download a month.
Its important to make the point that we used to be on 10Gb in Australia, and I was doing a lot of web stuff back then, where as now, I am hardly on the web. I have not downloaded a Linux distro for yonks (yeah, Dan, I know, sad isent it….)….. I guess my point is, that the big downloads are due to the streaming video, not due to surfing.

Anyway, when I am on the net, its lickty split and I am loving it!

  • Micro Blog.

You may have noticed a few things on the right hand side of the blog.
I will be messing around with the location ones a little, so for now just ‘ignore’ them.
However, I am happy playing with Twitter at the moment……
You can see any ‘tweets’ (who thinks of these silly little names?) I make on the right of this main part of my blog.
I have called them ‘micro blogs’. In a way, thats what they are, we are limited to 140 characters. I show the last three I have sent out.
If you notice something like ‘no public messages to display’ or some such, just ignore it, and wait a moment then hit refresh on your browser to reload this page, they should show up.
There should always be three entries to display.
You can see how old they are by looking at the end of the micro blog.
I can update it from my phone, so its easy for me to blat off a few updates a day (I have only done that many once, it is usually one a day)…. I guess my point is, I am not going to slack off on the main blog entries, but you can see in finer detail (sometimes) what I am up to by looking at the side of this main blog.

At the moment I am just using Twitter to update this ‘micro blog’ and my 14 followers with what I am doing or finding out…. I can see how it might be more useful if I had a lot of followers and asked questions…. This happen the other night with one of the guys at work…. His young son fell over and was knocked unconscious. He tweeted for some info on head trauma and I was able to give him the info he was seeking. That was the first time I saw a real point to Twitter…. in the mean time, you can just read this and my micro blog and know that I have a small odd life.
(If you are really keen you can sign up for Twitter and follow me or not).
