  • New groov video.

Here is our latest groov video.
Really happy with how this one came up.
We started shooting it months and months ago! No really, way too long ago. Everyone has just been too slammed with other stuff to get it finished.
Once groov started to get traction, we had to do the other videos you have seen, this one is more sales and marketing rather than technical like the others.

Anyway, its all shot on site here at work. All the people you see are employees here. The very first manager guy you see in the first clip is my boss, so you can finally put a face to the name.

Like I said, we are really happy with the way it came up.
All shot with a Canon 5dmk2 and mk3 cameras. We got a slider and so it gets a lot of use as you can see.
Not sure I can add that much more. It was a lot of work, but I think the result is really clean and well thought out.

  • What can come of some mates on Skype.

It just occured to me that perhaps some of you would not know that from time to time (seems like around once a month) Opto gets invited to comment on a topic of interest.
Sometimes those requests end up on my desk, sometimes others are better placed to talk about the subject.
This has been going on since before I got here.
Bottom line is you get quoted in trade magazines and websites a fair bit over the years……
    Here is one such example:
    http://www.automationworld.com/networking/ethernet-its-all-about-availability
The reason this one made it to this blog is because its a bit of shout out to my buddies Gary and Dan.
I have to credit them for the opening quote from me that made into this write up.
Its a sad quote for them, but typical. People really have lost their tolerance for downtime. Network, computer and just connectivity in general. Its now just expected 100% of the time.
The three of us Skype around once a quarter, its a great chance to catch up of course, but we are all still (even after all these years apart) resources for each other and we exchange all sorts of information and advice in the hour or so we Skype.
Its pretty cool and has some surprising knock on effects…. Like getting quoted in trade magazines (I gave the print copy to Terry to read).

  • 5 Minutes to groov

Not been blogging as regular as I would like, its been pretty busy over this part of the world with the new product. groov. Fun. But busy.

Here is the video that took up way too much of Jeff and Iz life a few weeks back…

It was a lot of work. Scripted, but no teleprompt, I had to learn it and get it right. I think we did about 20-25 takes. It was pretty exhausting.

Drove Jeff ‘mad’ hearing it over and over.

A few things worth noting. For the most part, its done in one take and in real time.
Yes, there is a cut when we go from me to the computer screen, but its still all done in real time… The way we did that was to speed up the video of the computer screen, then I put my audio over the top. In other words, we recorded me doing the computer stuff, then re-recorded just the audio of me talking the computer stuff.
What happens is that when I am doing both the computer and the talking, I am too slow, but it gets the flow right. So we do it twice and the second time, we speed up the playback of the video and I have to talk ‘fast’ to keep up.
Its a pretty cool trick that works well.

The one other thing I want to point out…. At the very end, when I hold up the phone, yeah, total fake.
I had the wrong screen up when we recorded, but we liked the take, so Jeff replaced the screen on the phone with another…. amazing bit of work!!!

We have learned a great deal, and hopefully the next one (start shooting in a week or so I suspect) will go a lot smoother in the recording process.

Anyway, I think its our most advanced in house video todate. New set, new backdrop, new product, new effects, new methods.

Twenty second tease to end with.

We are pretty excited about groov.

  • First day 5 years latter.

5 years ago today, I started at Opto.
Its also the first day for Jeff, our new videographer.
Super excited to have him onboard.
Here is an oldish demo reel http://vimeo.com/32028232 to give you all a bit of an idea of his tallent.
Really excited to be working with Jeff and looking forward to taking Opto videos to a whole new level (as you can already get a hint at with the groov videos Jeff has been cranking out).

While we are on the topic of photoy stuff…..
I got to shoot with Amy for the first time in what must be over a year…..

    Really happy with the results.

  • The local paper.

The local news paper sent a reporter to Opto last week to do a blurb on Opto’s involvement in the sub.
They did a really careful job of fact checking and such and it really shows in the article…. A few weeks back the other local paper did a telephone interview and article, it was so bad that I wanted to email the guy and ask him to change a few things to make it ‘right’, but never did… Clearly he had done it in a hurry and with little thought/care and had moved on.
In contrast, this journalist had done their job and it really shows.

The photo for the article was taken in the studio where we do the videos by the newspaper photographer. It was his idea to put all the Opto parts around me. Came out really well.
The video section also came up really well, again, just a testament not to me, but to the skills of the journalist and the video editor.

The print part made it into the business section of the paper on the weekend.

    Nice to see quality work.
